West Basin forms the western arm of Lake Burley Griffin, the artificial lake completed in 1963 that defines central Canberra. Sheltered by the Australian National University campus on one side and the parliamentary triangle on the other, it delivers a quieter, more intimate lakeside experience than the busier central basins. Native reeds line much of the shoreline, black swans and pelicans are common, and the water reflects the distinctive silhouette of Black Mountain Tower.
Follow the continuous lakeside path that runs from the ANU footbridge eastward toward Commonwealth Park; the West Basin section is roughly 2 km and almost flat, ideal for walking, jogging or cycling. On calm days hire a kayak or stand-up paddleboard from nearby operators and explore the reedy edges where waterbirds nest. Fishing is permitted with a current ACT recreational fishing licence; species include redfin perch and golden perch. Picnic tables and sheltered barbecues sit near the western shore, while the grassy slopes offer uninterrupted views toward Parliament House.
Spring and autumn deliver the most comfortable temperatures for outdoor time. Summer brings strong afternoon winds that suit experienced sailors but can make paddling choppy; winter mornings are crisp and often fog-filled, creating striking photographic conditions.
West Basin sits within easy reach of Canberra’s city centre. Cyclists and pedestrians use the extensive dedicated paths that connect Civic, the ANU and the lake edge. Several bus routes stop at the university and nearby Commonwealth Avenue; parking is available at the western end near the ANU sports fields and along Lady Denman Drive. The basin is also a natural stop on the longer Lake Burley Griffin circuit, which totals about 30 km around the entire lake.
After time on the water, stroll or ride into the Australian National University for its sculpture walk and public art galleries. A short distance south lie the National Gallery of Australia and High Court of Australia. Further east along the lake path leads to the Captain Cook Memorial Jet and the National Museum of Australia, both reachable on foot or by bike in under 30 minutes.
