Krietes Wald (Im Holze): A Protected Forest Sanctuary Near Bremen
This quiet woodland reserve in Osterholz offers peaceful trails through ancient trees and habitats for native wildlife…
A protected moorland area offering birdwatching, gentle walks, and rare flora just north of Bremen.
Nordwestliche Osterholzer Feldmark preserves a fragment of the historic Teufelsmoor landscape, a former raised bog that once stretched across much of northern Bremen. The reserve protects wet meadows, small peat ponds, and birch-alder woodland that support breeding birds, dragonflies, and orchids rarely seen closer to the city. Its flat terrain and network of maintained paths make it an easy escape for anyone seeking quiet nature without long travel.
Follow the circular walking routes that cross boardwalks over the wettest sections and follow grassy dikes along drainage ditches. Early morning or late afternoon visits often reveal grey herons, lapwings, and occasionally cranes feeding in the open fields. In summer the meadows bloom with marsh marigolds and spotted orchids; look for sundew and cotton grass in the damper pockets. Photographers favor the long sightlines across the flat landscape toward the distant geest ridge.
The reserve lies between Osterholz-Scharmbeck and the northern suburbs of Bremen. Regional trains stop at Osterholz-Scharmbeck station; from there a 25-minute bus ride or a pleasant cycle along the Hamme river reaches the main access points. Drivers can park at the small lots off the L149 or at the Teufelsbrück trailhead. The area is flat, so cycling from central Bremen via the Weser and Hamme cycle paths is straightforward and scenic.
Late spring through early autumn offers the richest wildlife and easiest walking. May and June bring breeding waders and peak wildflower displays, while September and October see migrating geese and cranes. Winter visits are possible but expect flooded paths and fewer birds; sturdy waterproof footwear is essential then.
Combine a visit with the artist village of Worpswede, 15 minutes north, known for its expressionist painters and thatched-roof cafés. The larger Teufelsmoor nature park extends eastward with additional trails, while the historic port town of Vegesack on the Weser offers riverside dining and boat trips back to central Bremen.
