Why Bultensee Stands Out
Bultensee is a small, spring-fed lake surrounded by pine forest and open heath in the Osterholz district. Its clear water and gently sloping sandy banks make it a reliable local swimming spot without the crowds found at larger lakes farther south.
Swimming and Water Activities
The eastern shore has the most accessible entry points where the bottom remains sandy for several metres. Swimmers share the water with dragonflies and occasional ducks; motorboats are not permitted, keeping the surface calm. In warmer months the lake warms quickly, and many visitors simply float or wade along the reed-lined edges.
Walking and Nature Observation
A flat 3 km loop path circles the lake through mixed woodland and heath. Short spurs lead to bird hides where herons and reed warblers can be seen. The surrounding Teufelsmoor landscape changes colour with the seasons, from purple heather in late summer to golden grasses in autumn.
Getting There
Regional trains stop at Osterholz-Scharmbeck; from the station a 25-minute bus ride or a 40-minute cycle on marked paths reaches the lake parking area. Cyclists can combine the visit with the long-distance Aller-Weser-Radweg. Drivers follow the B6 north from Bremen and turn onto the smaller L149.
Best Time to Visit
Late May through early September offers the warmest water and longest daylight for swimming and evening walks. Spring brings nesting birds and fewer visitors; October provides quiet paths and colourful foliage. Winter visits are possible for short walks but swimming is not recommended.
Nearby Places Worth Combining
The historic town of Osterholz-Scharmbeck lies 8 km south with its timber-framed houses and small museums. Further north, the Worpswede artist colony offers galleries and cafés set in the same moorland scenery. A short drive east reaches the Weser river cycle paths for longer day rides.
