Preah Palilay: A Quiet Buddhist Sanctuary Amid the Angkor Ruins
Discover the distinctive late-12th-century temple with its soaring tower and serene atmosphere inside Siem Reap’s Angkor…

Discover the delicate carvings and intimate scale of this lesser-visited Hindu sanctuary near Siem Reap.
Thommanon stands as one of Angkor’s most graceful small temples, offering visitors a quiet contrast to the crowds at larger sites. Built in the early 12th century of pale sandstone, the temple features a central tower, library, and mandapa connected by a short causeway. Its carvings remain remarkably crisp, depicting apsaras, devatas, and scenes from Hindu epics with unusual delicacy.
Constructed during the reign of Suryavarman II, Thommanon was dedicated primarily to Vishnu. The temple’s design reflects the transition from earlier flat-roofed structures to the more ornate, tower-focused architecture that reached its peak at Angkor Wat. Despite its modest size, the quality of the reliefs rivals many grander monuments, making it an excellent stop for those interested in Khmer stonework.
Begin at the eastern gopura and walk westward through the main entrance. The central sanctuary’s lintels and pediments display finely detailed floral motifs and mythological figures. The library building to the north contains some of the temple’s best-preserved apsara carvings. Allow time to circle the entire complex slowly; the afternoon light often highlights the depth of the reliefs on the western face.
Thommanon lies inside the Angkor Archaeological Park, roughly 1.5 km east of the Victory Gate. Most visitors reach it by tuk-tuk, bicycle, or on foot while exploring the eastern group of temples. The dry season from November to March offers the most comfortable conditions for walking the grounds. Early morning or late afternoon visits reduce both heat and the chance of sharing the site with tour groups.
Chau Say Tevoda sits just across the road, sharing a similar layout and era. A short walk north brings visitors to Ta Keo, while the Victory Gate itself provides easy access back toward Angkor Thom. Combining Thommanon with these neighboring sites creates a rewarding half-day circuit away from the busiest routes.
