Nursery Hill rises in the northern section of the Brindabella Ranges, offering hikers a compact yet rewarding summit experience within easy reach of Canberra. The mountain sits inside Namadgi National Park and delivers uninterrupted views across rolling eucalypt forests, the Cotter River catchment and distant peaks of the Australian Alps. Because the trail is less crowded than nearby Mount Gingera or Bimberi Peak, visitors often have the summit to themselves for long stretches.

Getting There

Drive south from Canberra on the Cotter Road, then follow Brindabella Road past the Cotter Dam. A signed turn-off leads to the Nursery Hill trailhead car park after roughly 45 minutes. The final section is unsealed but suitable for two-wheel-drive vehicles in dry conditions. No public transport reaches the trailhead, so a private vehicle or organised tour is required.

The Hike

A well-defined management track climbs steadily through snow-gum woodland and open heath before reaching the rocky summit plateau. The round-trip distance is approximately 8 km with 400 m of elevation gain. Allow three to four hours for a comfortable pace with time to enjoy the panorama. The route is marked but carries no water; carry at least two litres per person.

Best Time to Visit

Late spring through early autumn (October to April) provides the most reliable weather and flowering displays of native pea shrubs and orchids. Winter brings occasional snow and stronger winds, turning the walk into a more serious alpine outing that demands extra layers and navigation skills. Flora, Fauna and Photography

Look for eastern grey kangaroos grazing at dawn and the distinctive calls of gang-gang cockatoos in the canopy. In summer, the open slopes host colourful wildflowers that attract pollinators. The summit offers unobstructed 360-degree views ideal for sunrise or sunset photography, especially when low cloud fills the valleys below.

Nearby Attractions

Combine the hike with a visit to the historic Cotter Dam or the picnic areas along the Cotter River. Further south in Namadgi, the Yankee Hat rock-art site and the longer walk to Mount Kelly provide additional day-trip options. Canberra’s National Arboretum and Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve lie less than an hour’s drive away for those extending their stay.
