Chilkat River: Bald Eagle Capital Along the BC-Alaska Border
Float through salmon-rich waters teeming with eagles and bears in one of North America’s premier wildlife corridors.

Explore the dramatic alpine terrain, scenic trails, and mountaineering heritage of Mount Hungabee in British Columbia's Canadian Rockies.
Mount Hungabee rises prominently in Yoho National Park, offering visitors a striking example of the rugged Canadian Rockies. Its sharp pyramid shape and position above Lake O’Hara make it a focal point for hikers and photographers seeking dramatic high-country scenery without extreme technical climbing.
Access begins at the Lake O’Hara trailhead along the Trans-Canada Highway east of Field, British Columbia. A mandatory shuttle bus or limited day-hike permits control entry to protect the fragile alpine environment. From the lodge area, well-marked trails lead toward Opabin Plateau and viewpoints that showcase Hungabee’s north face. Strong hikers can reach high vantage points in a full day, while overnight backpackers use designated campsites.
The prime window runs from mid-July through early September when snow has cleared from most trails and wildflowers carpet the meadows. Early season offers fewer crowds but lingering snow patches; late season brings cooler temperatures and possible early storms. Winter visits require avalanche awareness and backcountry skiing experience.
Combine a visit with Lake O’Hara’s famous larch forests, the historic Abbot Pass hut, or the Icefields Parkway viewpoints. Nearby Lake Louise and Moraine Lake provide additional classic Rockies scenery within an hour’s drive.

Float through salmon-rich waters teeming with eagles and bears in one of North America’s premier wildlife corridors.
The mountain itself is a serious alpine objective best left to experienced mountaineers. However, excellent day hikes from Lake O'Hara provide outstanding views without technical climbing.
Guided hikes are available through licensed operators for the surrounding trails. Independent visitors should have strong navigation skills and proper equipment for high-alpine travel.
Expect to see marmots, hoary marmots, and golden-mantled ground squirrels on the plateau trails. Black bears and grizzlies inhabit lower elevations, so proper food storage is essential.
Trails to Opabin Plateau and Hungabee Lake involve steady elevation gain but are well-graded. Allow 6-8 hours round-trip from Lake O'Hara for a rewarding outing.
Parks Canada maintains several campgrounds around Lake O'Hara. Reservations are required and spots fill quickly during peak summer months.
