Cima Campuna: Hiking Abruzzo’s Quiet Apennine Summit
A rewarding climb through beech woods and alpine meadows to sweeping views across the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga…
Explore the quiet trails, sweeping Apennine views, and seasonal wildflowers of this understated mountain in central Italy's Abruzzo region.
Monte della Nebbia rises in the Sirente-Velino Regional Park, offering hikers a quieter alternative to the busier Gran Sasso massif. Its name, meaning “Mountain of Fog,” hints at the atmospheric mists that often cloak the summit, creating dramatic light and isolating the landscape from the plains below. The mountain’s limestone slopes support meadows of orchids and gentians in late spring and early summer, while autumn brings golden beech forests on the lower flanks.
Most travelers arrive by car from the A25 motorway, exiting at Celano or Avezzano and following provincial roads toward Ovindoli. The nearest reliable trailhead lies above the village of Rovere, where a gravel track leads to parking areas at roughly 1,600 meters. Public transport options are limited; regional buses serve Ovindoli from L’Aquila, after which a taxi or pre-arranged transfer is required for the final ascent. From Rome, the drive takes about two hours under normal traffic conditions.
Late May through early October provides the most reliable weather for hiking. Snow lingers into May on north-facing slopes, and sudden fog can reduce visibility even in summer. September often delivers clear days and fewer visitors once the Italian school holidays end. Winter visits are possible only with proper equipment and local guidance, as trails become icy and unmarked.
The standard route follows a well-marked path from the upper parking area to the 2,112-meter summit, taking three to four hours round-trip for fit walkers. Along the way, hikers pass karst sinkholes and seasonal streams that feed the Fucino basin. For longer outings, a ridge walk connects Monte della Nebbia with neighboring Monte San Felice, offering continuous views across the Abruzzo plateau toward the Maiella massif on clear days. Birdwatchers may spot golden eagles and choughs; the park protects several endemic plant species restricted to these high pastures.
Combining a morning on Monte della Nebbia with an afternoon visit to one of these sites creates a balanced day that showcases both natural and cultural Abruzzo.

No permanent facilities or reliable springs exist above the trailhead; carry all drinking water and plan to descend for meals or restrooms.
Winter access is possible only with mountaineering experience, crampons, and avalanche awareness; most visitors wait until late spring.
Golden eagles, ravens, and marmots are regularly seen; wolves inhabit the wider park but sightings remain rare.
A small gravel parking area exists near the start of the main path; arrive early on weekends as space is limited.
