Honeysuckle Creek Collimation Tower: Historic Apollo Site in the ACT Mountains
Hike to the remains of a key NASA tracking station that helped relay the first moonwalk to the world.
A rewarding bushwalk in Namadgi National Park offering sweeping views across the Cotter catchment and Brindabella wilderness.
Cotter Hill rises in the northern Brindabella Ranges within Namadgi National Park, offering visitors a genuine sense of remote Australian high country only an hour from Canberra. Its open eucalypt woodland and rocky outcrops deliver uninterrupted panoramas over the Cotter River valley and the distant peaks of the Bimberi Wilderness. The summit itself is modest in height yet delivers a strong sense of achievement for those who make the steady climb through quiet forest.
The most common access is via the sealed Cotter Road from Canberra, turning onto Mount Franklin Road and continuing to the Bulls Head or Warks Road trailheads. A high-clearance vehicle is recommended for the final gravel sections, especially after rain. From the car park, the main route follows a well-defined management track that climbs steadily through peppermint gum and snow gum woodland. Allow 45–60 minutes driving time from central Canberra.
Spring (September–November) brings wildflowers and comfortable daytime temperatures, while autumn (March–May) offers cooler, stable weather and fewer insects. Summer can be hot with the risk of bushfire; winter brings frost, occasional snow and shorter daylight. Always check park alerts for road conditions and fire danger before setting out.
The primary walk to the summit is an out-and-back route of approximately 12 kilometres with 450 metres of elevation gain. The track passes through varied forest before emerging onto open ridges with views toward Mount Ginini and the Cotter Dam. Strong walkers can extend the day by linking with the Mount Franklin fire trail or descending toward the Cotter River flats. Birdwatchers may spot wedge-tailed eagles, crimson rosellas and yellow-tailed black cockatoos. In spring, native orchids and pea flowers line the verges.
After your hike, continue to the Cotter Dam visitor area for a picnic beside the reservoir or drive a short distance further to Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve for wildlife encounters and easier walks. The historic Cotter Settlement and the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex are also within reach, making Cotter Hill an ideal anchor for a full day exploring the western ACT.

It is rated moderate. The track is steady but involves consistent elevation gain over rocky sections; most fit walkers complete the return trip in four to five hours.
Older children with hiking experience can manage the distance, but the long steady climb and lack of facilities make it better suited to teens and adults.
No. Namadgi National Park prohibits dogs on all walking tracks to protect native wildlife.
Turn back immediately. The open ridges offer little shelter and storms can arrive quickly; always check the forecast before departing.
There are no designated campsites on the hill itself. The nearest camping is at the Cotter Campground or further south at Mount Clear.
