Colle i Tre Piantoni: Hiking the Quiet Ridges of Abruzzo
This modest peak near the Monti della Laga offers hikers panoramic views over deep valleys and ancient beech forests…
A low-key summit in the heart of Abruzzo offering sweeping views and peaceful trails just outside L’Aquila.
Colle dell’Asino rises to 1,552 metres on the western flank of the Gran Sasso massif, providing an accessible introduction to Abruzzo’s high country without the crowds that gather on the Corno Grande. Its open meadows and scattered beech woods deliver long views across the Aterno valley and the distant Maiella massif, especially striking at sunrise when the limestone ridges turn pink.
The most popular route starts from the hamlet of San Gregorio and follows a wide track that climbs steadily through pasture before narrowing into a single path across the summit ridge. The round trip is roughly 8 kilometres with 550 metres of ascent, suitable for fit walkers in three to four hours. A shorter option begins from the Colle dell’Asino parking area reached by a gravel road from Pizzoli, cutting the hike to an easy two-hour loop. In spring the slopes are carpeted with wild orchids and asphodel; in autumn the beech woods glow gold. Birdwatchers often spot golden eagles and rock partridges above the treeline.
From December to March the mountain is frequently snow-covered and offers straightforward snowshoe routes, though avalanche risk on steeper faces requires checking local bulletins.
From L’Aquila, drive 15 kilometres north via the SS80 to Pizzoli, then follow signs for San Gregorio. A regular bus runs from L’Aquila’s Collemaggio terminal to Pizzoli; from there a taxi or 45-minute walk reaches the trailhead. The nearest train station is L’Aquila, with connections from Rome in about two hours.
Late May through early October brings reliable weather and open access. July and August can be hot at midday, so start early. Wild mushroom foraging is popular in September, but permits are required in protected zones of the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park.
Combine the hike with a visit to the medieval village of Santo Stefano di Sessanio or the ruins of the Roman city of Amiternum, both within a 30-minute drive. The Campo Imperatore plateau lies just over the ridge and offers further walking and the historic Albergo di Campo Imperatore.
