Colle i Tre Piantoni: Hiking the Quiet Ridges of Abruzzo
This modest peak near the Monti della Laga offers hikers panoramic views over deep valleys and ancient beech forests…
A remote summit in Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park offering sweeping Apennine views and uncrowded trails.
Colle della Casetta rises in the Monti della Laga range inside Abruzzo’s largest national park, where beech forests give way to open ridges with long-distance panoramas toward the Gran Sasso massif and the Marche border hills. Its modest height and lack of cable cars keep crowds away, making it ideal for hikers seeking quiet rather than summit selfies.
Reach the mountain by car from Teramo via the SS80 toward Campotosto, then follow signs for the Laga valleys. The final approach uses narrow forest roads that end at trailheads near the Colle. Public transport is limited; most travelers rent a car or join a guided nature tour from L’Aquila or Ascoli Piceno.
Late May through October offers the most reliable weather for walking. Snow lingers into spring and returns by November, closing higher paths. Autumn brings colorful foliage and fewer insects, while summer mornings stay cool at elevation.
The main route from the upper parking area climbs steadily through mixed woodland before emerging onto grassy slopes with views across the Aterno valley. A loop option circles the ridge, passing seasonal shepherds’ huts and wildflower meadows. Birdwatchers often spot golden eagles and choughs; photographers favor the late-afternoon light on the distant Gran Sasso peaks.
Combine the hike with a visit to Lago di Campotosto for flat lakeside walks or continue to the historic hamlets of Cortino and Fano Adriano for local cheese and cured meats. The area also serves as a gateway to longer treks into the heart of the national park.

This modest peak near the Monti della Laga offers hikers panoramic views over deep valleys and ancient beech forests…
The lower forest section is moderate, but the ridge walk involves steady elevation gain and some rocky sections; fit walkers manage it in a day, while novices may prefer a guided outing.
Expect only basic parking; bring all water, food, and waste bags as no services exist on the mountain itself.
Wild camping is not permitted inside the national park; overnight stays require authorized rifugi or valley accommodations.
Look for deer in the beech woods, eagles overhead, and in spring a variety of alpine flowers including gentians and orchids.
Deep snow and avalanche risk close routes from November to April; winter visits require mountaineering experience and proper equipment.
