Access begins from the southern end of the park via unsealed roads that require a high-clearance vehicle. Walkers follow a combination of management tracks and faint footpads that ascend steadily through snow gum woodlands and open heath. The route passes stands of alpine ash before reaching the rocky summit area, where careful scrambling leads to the best viewpoints. Carry a topographic map and compass, as mobile reception is unreliable.
Autumn and spring deliver the most comfortable conditions, with mild daytime temperatures and lower fire risk. Summer brings hot days and the possibility of thunderstorms, while winter can blanket the higher slopes in snow, turning the approach into a more technical outing. Always check current park alerts before setting out.
The area supports populations of eastern grey kangaroos, swamp wallabies, and a variety of birds including wedge-tailed eagles that soar above the ridges. Granite tors along the final approach create natural vantage points for photography. The surrounding forest changes with elevation, moving from tall wet sclerophyll to subalpine woodland near the top.
After descending, many visitors continue to the historic ruins at Brayshaw’s Homestead or the wetlands at the head of the Cotter River. The drive back through the park also passes Mount Gingera, another accessible summit with different but equally dramatic views.
