Saltspring Island: Artisan Markets and Coastal Trails in British Columbia’s Gulf Islands

This largest Gulf Island blends farms, studios, and quiet coves just a short ferry ride from Vancouver or Victoria.

British ColumbiaUpdated 22 June 2026

Why Saltspring Island Stands Out

Saltspring Island draws visitors with its balance of working farms, independent galleries, and protected shoreline that feels far removed from mainland bustle. The island’s 180 square kilometres support dozens of small producers whose cheeses, wines, and preserves appear at weekly markets, while old-growth forests and rocky beaches provide easy day hikes with views across the Strait of Georgia.

Getting There

Most travellers arrive by BC Ferries from Tsawwassen on the mainland or Swartz Bay on Vancouver Island; both routes land at Long Harbour or Vesuvius Bay. A scenic alternative is the short hop from Crofton on Vancouver Island to Vesuvius. Once on the island, a car or bicycle is useful because public transit is limited and attractions are spread out along narrow, winding roads.

Best Time to Visit

Late spring through early autumn brings the driest weather and the liveliest markets, with peak activity in July and August. Shoulder months of May, June, and September offer milder crowds and lower ferry demand while wildflowers or fall colours are still on display. Winter visits suit those seeking solitude and storm-watching, though some galleries and restaurants reduce hours.

Things to See and Do

Begin in Ganges, the main village, where the Saturday market fills Centennial Park with local produce, pottery, and jewellery. Nearby, Salt Spring Island Cheese and several wineries welcome tasters. Hikers head to Mount Maxwell Provincial Park for panoramic views or Ruckle Provincial Park for shoreline trails and historic farm buildings. Kayak or paddleboard rentals are available at several coves; the sheltered waters between Saltspring and neighbouring islands are ideal for beginners. Artists’ studios are open most weekends—look for the red “open studio” signs along the roads.

Nearby Destinations

From Saltspring it is easy to continue to other Gulf Islands such as Galiano or Pender by inter-island ferry, or return to Vancouver Island for Victoria’s Inner Harbour and Butchart Gardens, both less than an hour away once back on the larger ferry network.

Visitor tips

  • Reserve ferry crossings in advance on summer weekends and holiday Mondays, especially if travelling with a vehicle.
  • Carry cash for market purchases and small-farm stands, as many vendors do not accept cards.
  • Fill the fuel tank before arriving; the island has only a handful of stations and prices are higher than on the mainland.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the ferry take to Saltspring Island?+

Direct sailings from Tsawwassen run about 1 hour 40 minutes; the Swartz Bay route takes roughly 35 minutes.

Is a car necessary on Saltspring Island?+

Not essential in Ganges, but distances between trailheads, wineries, and beaches make a vehicle or bicycle the most practical way to explore the whole island.

Are there hiking trails suitable for families?+

Yes. Ruckle Provincial Park offers flat shoreline walks, while shorter sections of the Mount Maxwell road provide viewpoints without a full summit climb.

What local foods should visitors try?+

Island-made sheep and goat cheeses, fresh berries in season, and wines from the handful of local vineyards are widely available at markets and farm gates.

Can I visit studios without an appointment?+

Many artists post open-studio hours on weekends; maps are available at the visitor centre in Ganges or online through the islandu2019s arts council.
