Roque del Oeste: The Remote Volcanic Islet of Lanzarote’s Chinijo Archipelago
Experience the protected marine sanctuary of Roque del Oeste from the sea on boat tours departing from Lanzarote.

Discover the dramatic cliffs, seabird colonies and pristine waters of this tiny protected Canary Island.
Roque del Este rises sharply from the Atlantic as the easternmost point of the Chinijo Archipelago, a stark volcanic stack of basalt and tuff that forms part of Lanzarote’s marine reserve. Its sheer cliffs host one of the most important breeding colonies of Eleonora’s falcons in the Canaries, while the surrounding clear waters teem with parrotfish, groupers and occasional monk seals. Because the islet itself is uninhabited and strictly protected, visitors experience an almost untouched corner of the archipelago that feels worlds away from the busier beaches of Lanzarote.
Access is by boat only. Most visitors join small-group excursions from Órzola on Lanzarote or from Caleta de Sebo on La Graciosa. Trips usually combine Roque del Este with nearby Roque del Oeste and allow time for snorkeling in the lee of the rock. Independent boaters must obtain prior authorization from the Cabildo of Lanzarorte and respect strict no-landing rules except at designated mooring buoys. The crossing from Órzola takes roughly 45 minutes in calm seas; strong trade winds can make the passage rough, so check forecasts the day before.
April to June and September to October offer the calmest seas and the highest chance of seeing breeding falcons. July and August bring stronger winds and hotter sun, while winter months can deliver impressive swells that cancel boat trips. Early morning departures avoid the afternoon chop and give the best light for photography.
Combine a visit with a day on La Graciosa, whose white-sand beaches and volcanic hiking trails lie only a few nautical miles west. From Lanzarote, the Mirador del Río offers sweeping views over the entire Chinijo Archipelago, and the lava fields of Timanfaya National Park are a short drive south of Órzola. The small fishing village of Arrieta provides a quiet lunch stop on the return journey.
