Well-formed paths follow the riverbank for several kilometres, suitable for walking, jogging or cycling. Birdwatchers often spot white-faced herons, sulphur-crested cockatoos and occasional kingfishers along the water’s edge. Picnic tables and shaded areas under mature gums allow families to relax, while open fields suit casual ball games or kite flying. In spring, native wildflowers appear along the verges.
Early morning or late afternoon offers the best light for photography and cooler temperatures. Spring and autumn provide mild days with fewer insects than summer. Winter visits are quieter, though mornings can be frosty.
From Canberra city centre, drive southeast via the Monaro Highway and exit toward the park’s main car park. Public buses reach nearby stops on Hindmarsh Drive; from there it is a short walk or cycle along connecting paths. Secure bike racks are available at the entrance.
Combine a visit with a stop at nearby Jerrabomberra Wetlands Nature Reserve for additional birdlife, or continue to Lake Burley Griffin for longer waterfront walks. The park also sits close to several wineries in the Canberra District wine region.
