Mount Namadgi: Hiking the Highest Peak in the Australian Capital Territory
Tackle the summit trail through alpine forests and granite tors for sweeping views across Namadgi National Park.
A compact peak in the Australian Capital Territory offering easy trails, city vistas and a peaceful escape from Canberra’s urban core.
Reservoir Hill rises gently above the northern Canberra suburbs, providing walkers with sweeping views across the city, Lake Ginninderra and the distant Brindabella Ranges. Its modest elevation makes it an ideal half-day outing for locals and visitors seeking fresh air without committing to longer alpine treks.
The hill’s open eucalyptus woodland and grassy clearings deliver a genuine sense of escape while remaining within a 20-minute drive of the Parliamentary Triangle. On clear days the vista stretches from Black Mountain Tower to the snow-capped peaks west of the ACT. Wildflowers appear in spring and native birds, including crimson rosellas and yellow-tailed black cockatoos, are frequently seen.
A network of fire trails and narrow footpaths circles the summit. The main loop is roughly 3 km and takes 60–90 minutes at an easy pace. A short spur leads to a modest lookout platform with interpretive signage about local water catchments. Mountain biking is permitted on the wider management tracks; walkers should keep left and listen for approaching riders. Picnicking is popular on the flat grassy area near the reservoir itself, though shade is limited so bring a hat.
From Canberra CBD, take Northbourne Avenue north, then Belconnen Way west and follow signs toward Evatt. Limited roadside parking is available at the trailhead on Reservoir Hill Road. Public transport users can catch the R2 or R3 bus to the nearby suburb of McKellar and walk 15 minutes uphill. The route is well signed once you leave the sealed road.
Autumn (March–May) and spring (September–November) offer mild temperatures and lower fire risk. Summer visits are possible early in the morning before heat builds; winter mornings can be crisp but reward clear views. Always check the ACT Emergency Services app for fire-danger ratings before setting out.
Combine a visit with the wetlands at Lake Ginninderra, the National Arboretum Canberra or the walking tracks on nearby Mount Rogers. Belconnen Town Centre, 10 minutes away, provides cafés and supplies.
