Chilkat River: Bald Eagle Capital Along the BC-Alaska Border
Float through salmon-rich waters teeming with eagles and bears in one of North America’s premier wildlife corridors.

A practical guide to hiking trails, coastal villages, and ferry-accessed wilderness on Quadra Island.
Quadra Island sits in the Discovery Islands archipelago between Vancouver Island and the mainland, offering a low-key mix of old-growth forest, sheltered coves, and working artist communities. Visitors come for uncrowded trails, sea kayaking among seals and eagles, and a slower pace than nearby Campbell River or the Gulf Islands.
The island is reached by BC Ferries from Campbell River on Vancouver Island. The 10-minute crossing lands at Quathiaski Cove, the main settlement with a small grocery, post office, and several galleries. Most travelers bring a vehicle or rent one on Vancouver Island, though limited bus service and bike rentals exist near the terminal. From the Lower Mainland, drive the Sea-to-Sky Highway and Vancouver Island Highway to Campbell River first.
Rebecca Spit Marine Provincial Park features an easy waterfront loop trail with views across to Cortes Island and frequent sightings of harbor seals. Longer hikes lead through second-growth and old-growth forest at the Quadra Island Trail system and the steep climb to Chinese Mountain for panoramic views. Sea kayakers launch from April Point or Heriot Bay to explore the rocky shoreline and protected bays.
The island supports a year-round arts scene. Studios and galleries along West Road and at Cape Mudge showcase wood carving, pottery, and photography inspired by the coastal environment. The Kwakiutl Museum at Cape Mudge displays traditional Kwakwaka’wakw masks and totem poles.
Small public beaches at Village Bay and Granite Bay offer pebble shores and calm swimming in summer. Anglers target salmon and halibut from rented boats or guided charters departing Heriot Bay.
July and August bring the warmest weather and longest days for paddling and hiking, though ferries and trails are busiest then. Late spring and early fall offer fewer visitors, good wildlife viewing, and still-comfortable temperatures. Winter visits suit those seeking solitude and storm watching, but some galleries and lodges reduce hours.
Many travelers combine Quadra with a day trip to Cortes Island via the ferry from Heriot Bay or base themselves in Campbell River for access to Strathcona Provincial Park on Vancouver Island.
