Pujol des Gat: Hiking Mallorca’s Quiet Peak in the Serra de Tramuntana

A rewarding climb to one of the island’s lesser-known summits with sweeping views over the western Tramuntana.

Balearic IslandsUpdated 23 September 2026

Why Pujol des Gat Stands Out

Unlike the crowded trails around Puig Major or Sa Calobra, Pujol des Gat offers a quieter experience within the Serra de Tramuntana. At 536 metres, the summit delivers clear panoramas across pine-covered ridges, terraced valleys, and the Mediterranean coast on clear days. The mountain’s position near the western flank of Mallorca means fewer visitors even in peak season.

Getting There

Most visitors reach the trailhead by car from Palma, a drive of roughly 25 minutes via the Ma-1110 and local roads toward Valldemossa. Limited parking sits at the start of the forest track; arrive early to secure a space. Public transport is sparse, so hikers without a vehicle often combine a bus to nearby villages with a longer approach on foot.

The Hike to the Summit

The standard route follows a well-marked forest track that quickly narrows into a rocky path through holm oak and pine. The ascent gains around 300 metres over 2.5 kilometres and takes most walkers 60 to 90 minutes. The final section crosses open limestone slabs with occasional cairns guiding the way. At the top, a modest trig point marks the high point; linger to watch griffon vultures circling the ridges.

What to Bring and Expect

Carry at least two litres of water per person, as no springs exist on the route. Sturdy shoes are essential for the uneven limestone. The trail offers little shade after the first kilometre, so sun protection is vital. In winter, the path can become slippery after rain; micro-spikes are useful on icy days.

Best Time to Visit

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) provide the most comfortable temperatures and clearest visibility. Summer hikes start before dawn to avoid heat. Winter visits are possible but require checking weather forecasts, as strong Tramuntana winds can make the exposed summit unpleasant.

Nearby Attractions

Combine the hike with a visit to the historic village of Valldemossa, known for its Carthusian monastery and Chopin connections. Further west, the coastal town of Port d’Andratx offers harbourside dining and boat trips. The dramatic cliffs of Cap de Formentor lie a longer drive northeast but pair well for a full-day Tramuntana itinerary.

Visitor tips

  • Start early to avoid midday heat and secure parking at the trailhead.
  • Download an offline map; mobile coverage fades quickly once you leave the main road.
  • Respect the dry-stone walls and marked paths to help preserve the protected Tramuntana landscape.
