Puig de sa Cova Negra: Hiking Mallorca’s Quiet Eastern Peak
A rugged hike to sweeping coastal views on this lesser-known Balearic summit near Artà.
A rewarding half-day hike to sweeping views over olive groves, coast, and distant peaks on this accessible mountain near Sóller.
At roughly 400 metres, Puig de na Maria offers a compact yet satisfying climb through terraced olive groves and pine woodland typical of Mallorca’s northern Tramuntana. Unlike busier summits, the trail remains relatively quiet, rewarding hikers with unobstructed panoramas across the Sóller valley to the sea and the dramatic Puig Major massif.
The trailhead lies a short drive from Sóller on the MA-10 road toward Fornalutx. Drivers can park in small lay-bys near the signed start. Public transport users take the Sóller bus from Palma or the vintage tram from Port de Sóller, then walk or taxi the final kilometres. The approach road is narrow; early arrival avoids congestion.
A clear path ascends steadily through stone-walled terraces before entering shaded woodland. The final stretch is steeper and rocky, but no technical gear is required. Most walkers reach the summit cairn in 45–70 minutes and descend in similar time. Carry plenty of water; no reliable sources exist on the route.
Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) deliver mild temperatures and wildflowers or autumn colour. Summer hikes start at dawn to avoid heat. Winter days can be clear but windy; check forecasts for Tramuntana gusts.
