Mount 737: Hiking Canberra’s Quiet Brindabella Peak

A compact, rewarding summit in the Australian Capital Territory offering sweeping valley views without the crowds of higher peaks.

Australian Capital TerritoryUpdated 18 September 2026

Why Mount 737 Stands Out

Mount 737 rises gently in the northern Brindabella Range inside Namadgi National Park, offering an accessible introduction to the ACT’s high-country bushland. At roughly 737 metres, the summit delivers unobstructed sightlines across the Cotter River catchment and distant Canberra skyline on clear days. The mountain’s modest height keeps it uncrowded, yet its vegetation changes from dry eucalypt woodland to pockets of snow gum create a satisfying half-day escape from the capital.

Getting There

Most visitors start from Canberra’s western suburbs. Take the Cotter Road, then follow Brindabella Road past the Cotter Dam until the sealed surface ends. A high-clearance vehicle is recommended for the final gravel section to the trailhead near Mount Franklin Road. Allow 90 minutes from Civic under normal conditions. No public transport reaches the area, so private vehicle or organised tour is required.

Best Time to Visit

April to October provides the most comfortable temperatures and lower bushfire risk. Spring wildflowers appear from September, while autumn brings reliable clear skies for photography. Summer visits are possible but start early to avoid heat and afternoon storms; winter can bring frost and occasional light snow on the higher ridges.

Trails and Activities

The main out-and-back route from the upper car park covers approximately 6 km with 250 m elevation gain, taking three to four hours return for most walkers. The path follows an old fire trail before a short steep section to the rocky summit. No technical scrambling is needed. Birdwatchers often spot wedge-tailed eagles and crimson rosellas along the way. In cooler months, the same route works well for experienced mountain bikers.

Nearby Attractions

  • Corin Forest for year-round tobogganing and canopy tours.
  • The historic Cotter Dam and picnic grounds 20 minutes downhill.
  • Longer day walks to Mount Gingera or the Bimberi Wilderness area further south.

Combine a morning on Mount 737 with an afternoon at the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve for a full-day itinerary.

Visitor tips

  • Carry at least two litres of water per person; there are no reliable sources on the trail.
  • Download offline maps before leaving mobile coverage; signage is minimal beyond the trailhead.
  • Check the ACT Emergency Services app for park closures, especially during summer and after heavy rain.

Frequently asked questions

Is Mount 737 suitable for children?+

The trail is manageable for fit children over eight, but the final rocky section requires supervision.

Do I need a park pass?+

A valid ACT national parks pass is required and can be purchased online or at the visitor centre in Tharwa.

Are dogs allowed on the mountain?+

No domestic pets are permitted in Namadgi National Park to protect native wildlife.

What should I do if the weather turns?+

Turn back immediately; the exposed ridge offers little shelter and lightning risk is real in summer.

Is camping permitted near the summit?+

No; the nearest designated campground is at the Cotter River, a 30-minute drive away.
