Cima Campuna: Hiking Abruzzo’s Quiet Apennine Summit
A rewarding climb through beech woods and alpine meadows to sweeping views across the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga…
A rewarding day hike through beech forests to sweeping views over the central Apennines.
Monte Sant’Angelo rises above the high plateaus of western Abruzzo, offering hikers a compact but satisfying climb through mixed beech and pine woodland to a broad, open summit. Unlike the better-known Gran Sasso or Maiella massifs, this peak sees few crowds, delivering quiet trails and expansive panoramas across the Sirente-Velino Regional Park and toward the Fucino plain.
The mountain is reached most easily by car from Rome via the A25 motorway, exiting at Celano and following signs toward Ovindoli or Rovere. From L’Aquila the drive is shorter but involves winding mountain roads. Limited bus service runs to nearby villages; from there a taxi or pre-arranged transfer is usually required. Parking is available at the trailhead near the hamlet of Sant’Angelo, roughly 1,400 m elevation.
Late spring through early autumn provides the most reliable conditions. Snow lingers into May on north-facing slopes, while July and August can be hot and dry at lower elevations. September and October bring cooler temperatures, fewer insects, and golden beech foliage. Winter visits are possible for experienced snowshoers but require avalanche awareness and proper equipment.
The standard route follows a well-marked path that ascends steadily through dense forest before emerging onto grassy slopes near the summit cross. The round-trip distance is approximately 8 km with 600 m of elevation gain, suitable for fit walkers in 3–4 hours. Side trails lead to minor viewpoints and a small seasonal spring.
Lower slopes support mature beech woods that shelter roe deer and a variety of woodland birds. Higher up, open meadows host endemic Apennine flora including rare orchids in early summer. Patient observers may spot golden eagles circling the ridges. The summit itself offers 360-degree views encompassing the Gran Sasso to the north and the Marsica mountains to the south.

The route is moderate for anyone with reasonable fitness; expect steady uphill walking on good paths with no technical sections.
Public transport is limited; most visitors drive or arrange a taxi from Celano or Ovindoli.
Dogs are permitted if kept on a leash; remember to carry waste bags as there are no bins on the mountain.
Signal is patchy in the forest but improves near the summit; download an offline map before starting.
Turn around immediately; the open upper slopes offer little shelter and lightning risk is real.
