Colle i Tre Piantoni: Hiking the Quiet Ridges of Abruzzo
This modest peak near the Monti della Laga offers hikers panoramic views over deep valleys and ancient beech forests…
A rewarding summit hike in the Monti della Laga with sweeping views over the Gran Sasso massif and far fewer crowds than nearby Corno Grande.
Monte Infornace rises to 2,021 m in the Monti della Laga range inside Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park. Its broad summit offers unobstructed panoramas of the Gran Sasso’s northern ridges, the Laga valleys, and, on clear days, the Adriatic coast. Because the mountain lies slightly apart from the busiest Corno Grande trails, hikers often have the ridge to themselves even on summer weekends.
The standard route begins at the hamlet of Prati di Tivo (1,450 m) and follows a well-marked path through beech forest before emerging onto open pasture. The final 400 m of ascent crosses rocky ground but requires no technical climbing. Total distance is roughly 12 km out-and-back with 570 m of elevation gain; most fit walkers complete it in five to six hours. Spring brings carpets of narcissus and gentian; autumn colors the beech woods gold and orange.
Look for Apennine chamois on the higher slopes and golden eagles riding thermals above the ridge. The open summit is ideal for wide-angle shots at sunrise or sunset when the Gran Sasso’s limestone faces turn pink.
From Rome, the fastest approach is by car via the A24 motorway to Teramo, then the SS80 toward Pietracamela and the Prati di Tivo cable-car base. Public transport reaches Pietracamela; from there a local bus or taxi covers the final climb to the trailhead. In winter the road to Prati di Tivo may require snow chains.
Late May through early October offers the most reliable weather and snow-free trails. July and August bring long daylight and wildflower meadows, while September and October deliver cooler temperatures and fewer visitors. Winter ascents demand crampons and avalanche awareness.

It is a moderate day hike suitable for anyone with good fitness; the path is clear and the final slope is steep but non-technical.
Strong teenagers and fit seniors manage the route, but the rocky upper section and long distance make it unsuitable for young children or anyone with mobility limitations.
No reliable water sources exist above the trailhead; the nearest staffed rifugio is at Prati di Tivo.
Sturdy boots, sun protection, a lightweight windproof jacket, and plenty of food and water are essential; trekking poles help on the descent.
Dogs are permitted if kept on a leash; remember to bring waste bags as the national park enforces strict clean-up rules.
