Why Monte della Selva Rewards Visitors
Monte della Selva rises gently above the rolling plateaus east of L’Aquila, its rounded summit and mixed beech-and-pine cover creating a peaceful contrast to the sharper limestone ridges of the Gran Sasso. Hikers who make the modest effort find 360-degree panoramas that stretch from the Maiella massif in the south to the snow-streaked peaks of Campo Imperatore in the north. The mountain’s relatively low profile keeps it off most tourist itineraries, so trails remain uncrowded even on summer weekends.
Trail Highlights
The most popular route begins at the hamlet of San Benedetto in Perillis and follows a wide gravel track through open pasture before entering fragrant beech forest. After roughly two hours the path emerges onto the broad summit ridge, where a simple stone cairn marks the high point. Stronger walkers can continue along the ridge toward the neighboring Colle del Vento for an extended loop. In spring the meadows are carpeted with wild orchids and gentians; in autumn the beech woods turn vivid gold and red.
Flora, Fauna and Seasons
Abruzzo’s protected status means you may spot Apennine wolves, golden eagles, and the occasional Marsican brown bear at dawn or dusk. The mountain’s varied elevations support both Mediterranean maquis on south-facing slopes and alpine meadows higher up. Late May through early June and mid-September through October offer the most comfortable temperatures and clearest air for photography.
Getting There and Practical Logistics
Monte della Selva lies about 30 minutes’ drive from L’Aquila via the SS17 and minor roads toward the village of Barisciano. Public transport is limited, so most visitors rent a car or join a guided nature walk from L’Aquila. Parking is available at several trailheads; arrive early on weekends. No facilities exist on the mountain itself, so carry plenty of water and a packed lunch.
Nearby Attractions Worth Combining
After descending, many travelers continue to the medieval hill town of Santo Stefano di Sessanio or the evocative ruins of the ancient Roman town of Amiternum. The nearby Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park offers additional longer treks for those wanting more challenge.
