Toppe Vurgo: Hiking Abruzzo’s Quiet Apennine Summit
A rewarding day hike to sweeping limestone views in Italy’s lesser-visited central highlands.
A rewarding day hike to a lesser-known peak offering sweeping views across Italy's wild Apennine heartland.
Monte Cofanello rises within the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park, offering hikers a quieter alternative to the busier Corno Grande. Its rounded summit delivers unobstructed panoramas over the Campo Imperatore plateau, the Laga Mountains, and on clear days the Adriatic Sea. The terrain mixes limestone ridges with grassy slopes that support rare alpine flowers and chamois herds.
The most direct route starts from the Fonte Cerreto area near Assergi. The path climbs steadily through beech woods before emerging onto open ridges. Expect a mix of well-marked trails and occasional rocky sections requiring sure footing. From the summit, continue along the ridge for extended views or descend via the southern flank for a loop back to the trailhead. The round-trip distance is roughly 12 kilometers with 800 meters of elevation gain, suitable for fit walkers who allow six to eight hours including breaks.
Spring brings gentians and saxifrage; autumn colors the beech forests gold. Keep binoculars ready for golden eagles and, with luck, Apennine wolves in the valleys below.
Drive from L’Aquila via the SS17bis toward Assergi, then follow signs for the Gran Sasso cable-car base. Limited public buses run from L’Aquila to Assergi in summer; a taxi or organized transfer is practical from Rome or Pescara. Park at the lower cable-car station and begin the hike from there.
Late May through October offers the most reliable conditions. Snow lingers into June on north-facing slopes, while July and August bring the clearest skies but also afternoon thunderstorms. Early autumn provides milder temperatures and fewer visitors.
Combine the hike with a visit to the medieval village of Santo Stefano di Sessanio or the ancient ruins at Amiternum. The Campo Imperatore plain is ideal for stargazing or a cable-car ride to higher viewpoints when legs need rest.

It is a moderate-to-strenuous day hike best suited to those with prior mountain experience; the final ridge involves some exposure but no technical climbing.
No permanent huts sit directly on the Cofanello trail, so carry all supplies; the nearest staffed rifugio is at Campo Imperatore, a short detour after descent.
Only with older, experienced children who can handle six-plus hours of walking; younger kids are better suited to shorter valley walks in the same park.
Far less busy than Corno Grande, yet Saturday mornings in July and August can see groups; start at dawn to enjoy solitude.
Descend immediately by the same route you ascended; the open ridges offer little shelter, so always carry a lightweight waterproof layer and check forecasts the evening before.
