La Solagna: Hiking Abruzzo’s Quiet Gran Sasso Summit
La Solagna rises above the high plateaus of central Abruzzo, delivering wide Apennine views and uncrowded trails inside…
La Piaggia offers hikers sweeping views across Abruzzo’s central highlands with trails that reward steady effort rather than crowds.
La Piaggia rises as a modest yet rewarding peak in the Apennine chain of Abruzzo, offering hikers an accessible summit without the heavy traffic found on Gran Sasso or Campo Imperatore. Its slopes feature open meadows, limestone outcrops, and scattered beech woods that change color dramatically with the seasons. From the top, clear days reveal the chain of the Velino-Sirente massif to the south and the distant snow-streaked profile of the Gran Sasso to the north.
Most visitors approach from the L’Aquila side. Drive the SS17 toward Scoppito, then follow minor roads toward the hamlet of Colle di Roio. A signed gravel track continues to a small parking area at roughly 1,100 meters. From there, the main path climbs steadily through pasture and light woodland, gaining about 450 meters over three kilometers. The route is well marked with red-and-white paint but requires basic navigation skills in fog.
Late May through early October provides the most reliable conditions. Spring brings wildflowers and flowing streams; autumn offers cooler temperatures and fewer insects. Winter snow can linger above 1,400 meters, turning the upper slopes into a simple but exposed ski-touring route for experienced travelers with proper gear.
The out-and-back hike to the summit takes three to four hours for most walkers. At the top, a modest cairn marks the high point and provides a 360-degree panorama. Photographers favor late afternoon light when the western ridges glow. Birdwatchers often spot golden eagles and, occasionally, Apennine wolves in the surrounding valleys. For a longer day, continue along the ridge toward the neighboring saddle of Forca di Penne before descending via a different valley path.
Combine a morning on La Piaggia with an afternoon tasting pecorino and ventricina in the village of Capestrano for a complete Abruzzo day.

The route is rated moderate: steady uphill on clear paths with no technical scrambling, suitable for fit walkers with basic mountain experience.
Older children accustomed to walking can manage the ascent, but the lack of shade on the upper slopes makes it less ideal for very young hikers in summer heat.
No services exist at either location; plan to carry all supplies and use facilities in nearby villages before starting.
Wild camping is tolerated in the open meadows below the summit provided you leave no trace and avoid protected zones; formal campsites lie farther away near Lu2019Aquila.
Red deer, foxes, and various raptors are common; keep a respectful distance and store food securely if stopping for lunch.
