Colle i Tre Piantoni: Hiking the Quiet Ridges of Abruzzo
This modest peak near the Monti della Laga offers hikers panoramic views over deep valleys and ancient beech forests…
Explore the wild trails, sweeping valley views, and peaceful summits of Il Morrone in Italy’s Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park.
Il Morrone rises above the Peligna Valley in Abruzzo, offering hikers a quieter alternative to the busier Gran Sasso peaks. Its slopes support beech forests, limestone ridges, and open meadows that change color with the seasons. From the summit, the landscape stretches across the Maiella massif to the Adriatic coast on clear days.
The most common route begins near Pacentro and climbs through mixed woodland before reaching the broad ridge. Hikers can continue along the crest toward the main summit for wide views of the valley below. In spring, the lower slopes bloom with wildflowers; in autumn, the beech woods turn gold. Winter visitors may find snow cover suitable for snowshoeing on gentler sections.
Wildlife is abundant. Chamois and golden eagles frequent the higher slopes, while the forests host deer and wild boar. Carry binoculars and move quietly for the best sightings.
Il Morrone sits between Sulmona and Pacentro. Most visitors drive to trailheads outside Pacentro or along the valley road. Regional trains reach Sulmona station, from which local buses or taxis cover the remaining distance to the mountain’s lower approaches. Parking areas at the start of marked paths fill quickly on weekends.
Late spring through early autumn provides the most reliable weather for reaching the summit. July and August can be hot at lower elevations, so early starts are advisable. October brings cooler temperatures and fewer people. Always check recent snow conditions before attempting the ridge in shoulder months.
After a hike, the medieval hill town of Pacentro offers stone streets and a castle with valley views. Sulmona, a short drive away, is known for its historic center and traditional confetti sweets. The nearby Maiella National Park provides additional trails for those wanting more time in the mountains.

Most hikers allow four to six hours round-trip from the main trailheads near Pacentro, depending on fitness and chosen route.
The lower paths are manageable for fit walkers, but the final ridge requires steady footing and some exposure; novices should join a guided group.
No huts or services exist above the trailhead parking areas, so bring all supplies and plan to return to valley towns for meals.
Winter access is possible with snowshoes or crampons on the lower routes, but the summit ridge demands mountaineering experience and proper gear.
Chamois, eagles, and deer are regularly spotted; early morning or dusk offers the best chances for sightings.
