Traverse the quiet waters and bushland of Hospital Creek, a lesser-known river offering raw wilderness just outside Canberra.
Hospital Creek flows through rugged eucalypt forests and granite country in the southern reaches of the Australian Capital Territory. Its clear waters carve through steep valleys, creating pockets of riparian habitat that support native fish, platypus and a wide range of woodland birds. Unlike busier rivers closer to Canberra, this waterway remains largely untouched, giving visitors a genuine sense of remote bushland within a short drive from the city.
The creek lies south-west of Canberra, accessed via the Cotter Road and then unsealed forestry tracks. A high-clearance vehicle is recommended after rain, as sections become slippery. Park at designated pull-offs near the creek crossing and continue on foot along informal riverside paths. No formal public transport reaches the area, so private vehicle or organised tour is essential.
Spring and autumn deliver the most comfortable temperatures and reliable water flow. Summer can bring intense heat and bushfire risk, while winter often sees the creek reduced to shallow pools. Early morning visits reward birdwatchers with active wildlife before daytime temperatures rise.
Follow the creek downstream on foot for several kilometres, crossing small rock bars and passing stands of river she-oak. The terrain is uneven but rewarding, with occasional granite outcrops offering elevated views across the valley.
Anglers target trout in deeper pools during cooler months. Keep an eye out for platypus at dawn or dusk and listen for the distinctive calls of gang-gang cockatoos overhead. Binoculars and a quiet approach greatly increase sighting chances.
The interplay of light on water and the surrounding forest makes for striking images, especially in the golden hours. The absence of crowds allows for peaceful contemplation beside the flowing water.
Combine a visit with the nearby Cotter River or head further into Namadgi National Park for longer hikes to mountain peaks. The historic Cotter Dam and picnic areas provide convenient stops before or after exploring the creek.
