Hardy Hill rises in the western reaches of the Australian Capital Territory, providing a peaceful alternative to busier Canberra trails. Its modest elevation and open eucalypt woodland deliver unobstructed panoramas of the Brindabella Ranges, the Cotter Valley and distant snow-capped peaks on clear winter days. The summit rewards walkers with a sense of remoteness while remaining accessible for a half-day outing from the city.
The most straightforward approach is via the Cotter Road and then Brindabella Road. Turn onto the unsealed Warks Road, which leads to the start of the walking track. A high-clearance vehicle is advisable after rain, though the route is usually manageable in a standard car during dry periods. From the trailhead, a steady climb on a well-defined fire trail reaches the summit in roughly two hours one way.
No regular buses serve the immediate area, so visitors without cars typically join organised bushwalking groups or arrange a drop-off. Mountain bikers can ride sections of the fire trail, though the final ascent is steep and best walked.
Autumn and spring offer the most comfortable temperatures and reliable track conditions. Summer walks should begin early to avoid heat, while winter brings crisp air and occasional light snow on higher ridges—ideal for those prepared with layers. Avoid the area during extreme fire-danger days, common in the ACT from December to February.
The main draw is the summit loop, which circles the trig point and offers 360-degree views. Birdwatchers may spot wedge-tailed eagles and crimson rosellas, while wildflower displays appear in spring. The surrounding forest is popular for quiet photography and mindful walking. No facilities exist at the summit, so carry all supplies.
