Lesum River: Scenic Walks and Nature Along Bremen’s Northern Waterway
Follow the tranquil Lesum through Vegesack for riverside paths, birdlife, and easy access to the Weser estuary.

A tranquil nature sanctuary of wet meadows and diverse wildlife just north of Bremen’s city center.
Hammersbecker Wiesen is a designated nature reserve covering damp meadows and small water bodies that support rare plants, breeding birds and amphibians. Its location in the Vegesack district makes it an easy escape from urban Bremen while remaining within city limits.
Follow the network of boardwalks and grass paths that cross the meadows. Early morning visits reveal reed warblers, snipe and occasional marsh harriers. In spring and early summer the grassland blooms with orchids and buttercups. Photographers find good vantage points from the slightly raised edges of the reserve. The flat terrain suits relaxed walking or gentle cycling; allow two to three hours to cover the main loops without rushing.
Late April through June offers peak bird activity and wildflower displays. September and October bring autumn colors and migrating geese. Winter visits are quieter and best for observing overwintering waterfowl, though paths can be muddy.
Reach Vegesack by regional train from Bremen Hauptbahnhof in about 20 minutes. From Vegesack station, local buses or a 25-minute walk along the Weser dike lead to the reserve entrance. Cyclists can use the well-marked Weser Cycle Path that skirts the area. Limited free parking is available at the western edge near the sports fields.
Combine a visit with Vegesack’s historic harbor and the Schiffsanleger for river views. The nearby Farge district offers additional riverside walks, while the expansive Blockland meadows lie a short drive south if you want to extend your nature day.
