Arrive at the small parking area and walk a short gravel path to the fenced viewing platform. On clear days the lake stretches like a mirror, reflecting the Captain Cook Memorial Water Jet and framing the National Library and High Court buildings on the far shore. Early morning or late afternoon light brings out the red-brown tones of the surrounding eucalypts and the pale stone of nearby diplomatic residences. Photographers often use the low stone wall as a foreground element while capturing the full sweep from west to east. Birdwatchers may spot pelicans, cormorants and occasional wedge-tailed eagles riding thermals above the lake.
Getting There
Drive via Adelaide Avenue or Empire Circuit and turn into the signed Government House Lookout car park. Public transport users can take bus routes serving Yarralumla and walk the final 400 metres along a footpath. The site is also reachable by bicycle on the extensive Lake Burley Griffin cycle network; secure racks are provided near the lookout.
