Ginger Ale Mountain rises in the Brindabella Range within Namadgi National Park, offering hikers a quieter alternative to more popular ACT peaks. Its open eucalyptus forests and rocky outcrops provide uninterrupted views across the Cotter River catchment and distant Snowy Mountains. The summit rewards steady effort with a sense of isolation rare so close to Canberra.
Drive south from Canberra via the Cotter Road, then follow Brindabella Road into the national park. A high-clearance vehicle is advisable for the final unsealed stretch leading to the trailhead car park. From there, the marked walking track climbs steadily through snow-gum woodland before emerging onto the summit plateau. Allow two to three hours each way for the return journey on foot.
Late spring through early autumn delivers the most reliable conditions, with mild temperatures and fewer frosts. Winter visits bring crisp air and possible light snow, but require extra preparation for slippery rocks and sudden weather changes. Avoid the peak of summer bushfire season when park access may be restricted.
The main activity is the out-and-back hike to the summit. Along the way, watch for eastern grey kangaroos at dawn and wedge-tailed eagles soaring overhead. At the top, granite tors offer sheltered spots for lunch while scanning the horizon. Photographers appreciate the golden light on the surrounding ridges just before sunset. For those seeking variety, combine the ascent with a side trip along the adjacent ridgeline for different vantage points.
After descending, continue along Brindabella Road to the historic Cotter Dam or explore the short walks around the visitor centre at Namadgi. The region also connects to longer multi-day routes such as the Australian Alps Walking Track, allowing experienced hikers to extend their journey into Kosciuszko National Park.
