Unisee: Bremen’s Tranquil Lake Retreat in Horn-Lehe
A peaceful university-adjacent lake offering scenic walks, water views, and easy access from central Bremen.

Visit the towering research facility in Horn-Lehe where free-fall science meets public tours and striking views.
Fallturm Bremen stands 110 meters tall on the University of Bremen campus in the Horn-Lehe district. Built for the Center of Applied Space Technology and Microgravity, the tower creates brief periods of weightlessness by dropping capsules down a vacuum tube. Visitors gain rare insight into how researchers study fluid behavior, combustion, and materials in near-zero gravity.
Guided tours lead groups through the control rooms, exhibit areas, and the base of the drop shaft. Displays explain the physics behind each 4.7-second free-fall experiment. On clear days the upper viewing platform offers panoramas across Bremen’s rooftops toward the Weser River. Allow two hours for the tour plus time to explore the small science shop.
Reach the site easily by public transport. Tram line 6 stops at “Universität” just a short walk from the tower entrance. Cyclists can follow the marked paths through the campus green spaces. Drivers will find limited visitor parking along the adjacent streets; most arrive without a car.
Spring through autumn provides the most comfortable weather for walking the campus grounds. Weekday tours tend to be quieter than weekend slots. The facility remains open year-round, though winter visits focus more on indoor exhibits due to shorter daylight.
After your tour, stroll the rhododendron park in nearby Rhododendron-Park Bremen or continue into the city center to see the historic market square and Roland statue. The Universum Science Center, also on campus, complements the drop-tower experience with hands-on space exhibits.
Public tours run on scheduled days; check the current calendar on the ZARM website before traveling.
Most guided tours last about 90 minutes, plus time for the exhibition and viewing platform.
Children are welcome on family-friendly tours; some sessions include simple experiments suitable for ages eight and up.
A service elevator reaches the upper viewing level during tours, though the main shaft itself remains closed to visitors.
Tours continue regardless of weather because the main areas are indoors, but the outdoor viewing platform may close in high winds.
