Es Puig Ventós rises above the western foothills of Mallorca’s Serra de Tramuntana, giving hikers a compact but satisfying ascent through terraced olive groves and pine woodland to a rocky summit with 360-degree panoramas. Unlike the busier peaks near Sóller or Valldemossa, this mountain remains relatively quiet, making it ideal for those seeking solitude while still enjoying classic Tramuntana scenery of jagged limestone ridges, terraced farmland and distant sea views.

Getting There

The trailhead lies near the village of Puigpunyent, easily reached by car from Palma in roughly 25 minutes via the Ma-1030 road. Public transport is limited, so most visitors drive and park in a small lay-by at the start of the path. From the parking area a clear, well-marked trail climbs steadily through private fincas and public woodland; the route is signed with the GR-221 long-distance trail markers in places.

The Hike Itself

The out-and-back route covers approximately 8 km with 450 m of elevation gain and typically takes three to four hours. The lower section follows a wide track past ancient olive trees before narrowing into a rocky path that zig-zags up the final slopes. At the summit a simple cairn and trig point mark the top; on clear days you can see the Puig Major massif to the north and the sparkling bay of Palma to the south.

Flora, Fauna and Photography

Spring brings carpets of wild orchids and asphodel along the trail, while autumn offers cooler temperatures and fewer insects. Look out for resident Bonelli’s eagles soaring overhead and the occasional wild goat on the higher slopes. Photographers should aim for early morning light when the valley mist often lingers below the ridges.

Best Time to Visit

October to May offers the most comfortable temperatures and reliable trail conditions. Summer hikes are possible but start at dawn to avoid midday heat and carry extra water. Winter days can be crisp and clear, though occasional snow dusts the higher ridges.
