Colle i Tre Piantoni: Hiking the Quiet Ridges of Abruzzo
This modest peak near the Monti della Laga offers hikers panoramic views over deep valleys and ancient beech forests…
A lesser-known ridge in the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park offering panoramic views and peaceful trails.
Costa Pratere rises as a broad, grassy ridge on the western flank of the Gran Sasso massif. Its open slopes and gentle profile make it ideal for hikers seeking solitude rather than crowds. From the crest, visitors enjoy sweeping views across the Campo Imperatore plain to the south and the rugged peaks of Corno Grande to the north. The area supports typical Abruzzo highland flora—juniper, mountain pine, and summer wildflowers—while offering a realistic chance of spotting Apennine wolves or golden eagles.
The nearest access point is the village of Pietracamela, roughly 30 minutes by car from Teramo. From there, a narrow paved road climbs toward the hamlet of Prati di Tivo before continuing on an unpaved track to the trailhead at Fonte del Campo. Public transport is limited; most visitors arrive by car or join a guided transfer from L’Aquila. Parking is available at the trailhead but fills quickly on summer weekends.
Late spring through early autumn provides the most reliable conditions. Snow lingers on north-facing slopes into May, while July and August bring warm days and occasional thunderstorms. September offers clear air and fewer visitors. Winter visits require mountaineering experience and avalanche awareness.
The main loop from Fonte del Campo to the summit of Costa Pratere and back via the eastern shoulder takes three to four hours and gains about 450 meters. A longer option continues along the ridge toward Monte Cardito before descending to Prati di Tivo. The terrain is mostly grassy with occasional rocky sections; no technical climbing is required. In summer, the open meadows are perfect for picnics, while autumn brings golden light and quieter paths.
After descending, many travelers continue to the cable-car station at Prati di Tivo for easier access to higher Gran Sasso trails or drive south to the historic village of Castel del Monte. The nearby town of Santo Stefano di Sessanio offers medieval stone architecture and local pecorino cheese producers.

Wild camping is not allowed inside the national park; overnight stays require a permit or use of official campsites near the villages.
