Colle i Tre Piantoni: Hiking the Quiet Ridges of Abruzzo
This modest peak near the Monti della Laga offers hikers panoramic views over deep valleys and ancient beech forests…
A rewarding day hike to panoramic views in the Monti della Laga range of Abruzzo’s national park.
Colle Telleto rises in the Monti della Laga, part of the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park in northern Abruzzo. The mountain offers hikers broad vistas across the Tronto valley toward the Sibillini Mountains and the Adriatic Sea on clear days. Its slopes are covered in beech woods and open meadows that support wildflowers in spring and autumn foliage, making it a quiet alternative to busier Gran Sasso peaks.
The nearest towns with lodging are Amatrice to the south and Ascoli Piceno just across the regional border. From either base, drivers follow the SS4 Salaria to the village of Pescara del Tronto, then take the narrow road toward Forca di Presta. A signed trailhead lies a short distance beyond the last houses. Public transport is limited; most visitors arrive by car and park at the trailhead area.
The standard route follows path 210 through mixed woodland before emerging onto grassy slopes. The ascent is steady rather than steep, gaining roughly 600 metres over 4–5 km. At the summit ridge, a small cairn marks the high point and provides 360-degree views of the surrounding ridges.
Late May through early October offers the most reliable conditions. Snow lingers on north-facing slopes into June, while July and August can be hot and dry at lower elevations. Autumn brings cooler temperatures and fewer people. Winter visits require snowshoes or crampons and should only be attempted by experienced mountaineers.

The route is rated moderate for fit walkers; the main challenge is the sustained climb and navigation on the upper meadows where the path is faint in places.
Older children accustomed to mountain walking can manage the outing, but the distance and elevation gain make it unsuitable for very young hikers.
No services exist at the start; bring all supplies and use facilities in Pescara del Tronto or Amatrice before setting out.
Only for those equipped with winter mountaineering gear and avalanche awareness; the mountain is not groomed or patrolled in winter.
Red deer, roe deer, and golden eagles are regularly spotted; keep a respectful distance and stay on marked paths.
