The most popular route starts from the Fonte Cerreto parking area near Assergi and follows a well-marked path that climbs steadily through beech forest before emerging onto open pasture. After roughly two hours the trail reaches the broad saddle of Colle Pretoso, where wildflowers carpet the ground in early summer and herds of Apennine chamois sometimes appear on distant slopes. From the summit ridge you can continue along an easy undulating path toward nearby Colle dell’Acquachiara for extended loops.

Wildlife and Seasons

Spring brings gentians and narcissus; autumn offers golden beech leaves and clear air for photography. Snow can linger into May and return by November, so the practical hiking window runs from late May through October.

Getting There

Drive the A24 motorway to the Assergi exit, then follow signs toward Campo Imperatore. A paved road ends at Fonte Cerreto; from there the path is signed. Public transport is limited—regional buses reach L’Aquila, after which a taxi or arranged transfer is needed for the final stretch. No permits are required for day hiking.
