La Solagna: Hiking Abruzzo’s Quiet Gran Sasso Summit
La Solagna rises above the high plateaus of central Abruzzo, delivering wide Apennine views and uncrowded trails inside…
Hike to sweeping Apennine views and peaceful meadows on this lesser-known peak near L’Aquila.
Colle Peschiarolo rises gently above the rolling plateaus of Abruzzo, offering hikers a quieter alternative to the busier summits of Gran Sasso or Majella. At roughly 1,800 meters, the mountain delivers wide panoramas of the Sirente-Velino chain and distant snow-capped peaks without requiring technical climbing skills.
The most popular route begins from the small hamlet of Fonteavignone and follows a wide gravel track that climbs steadily through beech woods before opening onto grassy slopes. The final section to the broad summit is a gentle ridge walk with occasional rocky outcrops. Along the way, spring brings carpets of wildflowers, while autumn colors the beech forest in gold and rust. Birdwatchers often spot golden eagles and choughs circling the ridges.
Late May through early October provides the most reliable conditions for hiking. Snow can linger into May on north-facing slopes and returns by late October, so winter visits require mountaineering equipment and local guidance. Summer afternoons can be warm even at elevation, making early starts advisable.
From Rome, the A24 motorway leads to L’Aquila in about 90 minutes; continue south on the SS5 for another 25 minutes to the turnoff for Fonteavignone. The final approach uses a narrow paved road that ends at a small parking area. Public transport is limited, so most visitors arrive by car or arrange a taxi from L’Aquila’s station.
After descending, spend time at the medieval village of Santo Stefano di Sessanio, known for its stone architecture and saffron fields. The nearby Campo Imperatore plateau offers additional walking routes and the historic Albergo di Campo Imperatore, once used by Italian royalty. For a longer day, continue to the Grotte di Stiffe, a dramatic limestone cave system with underground waterfalls.
