Boboyan Divide sits high in Namadgi National Park, marking a natural saddle between the Cotter and Naas catchments. The area delivers classic Australian Alps scenery: granite tors, snow-gum woodlands and long vistas across the Bimberi Wilderness toward the peaks of Kosciuszko National Park. Because it lies 90 minutes south of Canberra, the divide feels remote yet remains accessible for a full-day outing.
Drive south from Canberra on the Monaro Highway, then turn west onto Boboyan Road. The unsealed section climbs steadily through forest to the divide itself. A high-clearance vehicle is useful after rain, though two-wheel-drive cars can reach the main parking area in dry conditions. Continue a short distance beyond the saddle for trailheads that lead into the surrounding ridges.
The primary activity is hiking. Short walks from the divide summit reveal 360-degree views of the Brindabella Range and the distant Snowy Mountains. Longer options include the trail toward Mt Kelly or linking with the Yankee Hat walking track for rock-art sites. In spring, the heath blooms with pea flowers and orchids; in autumn the snow gums turn golden. Wildlife sightings often include eastern grey kangaroos, wedge-tailed eagles and the occasional echidna.
Late spring through early autumn offers the most reliable weather and open roads. Snow can fall any month above 1,200 metres, so winter visits require chains and extra caution. Summer days are warm but thunderstorms build quickly; start early to avoid afternoon lightning.
Combine a visit with the Cotter River picnic areas or the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve to the north. Further south, the Naas Valley and Mt Clear camping area provide additional overnight options inside the park. The whole region forms part of the Australian Alps Walking Track, so ambitious hikers can extend their journey toward Tharwa or even into New South Wales.
