Beng Riel Lake: Cambodia’s Quiet Countryside Escape in Kampong Thom
A peaceful freshwater lake offering authentic rural scenery, birdlife, and gentle boat travel just outside Kampong Thom…
Find calm waters, local fishing life, and easy nature escapes at this lesser-known lake northwest of Kampong Thom town.
Beng Tung sits in the flat lowlands of Kampong Thom Province, offering visitors a genuine slice of rural Cambodia without crowds. The lake stretches roughly three kilometers and is fed by seasonal rains and small streams from the surrounding plains. Local families fish from wooden boats at dawn, while the shallow edges attract wading birds and butterflies. Because the site sees few foreign visitors, the atmosphere stays peaceful even on weekends.
Reach Beng Tung by road from Kampong Thom town, about 25 kilometers northwest via National Road 6 then smaller laterite tracks. Most travelers hire a motorbike taxi or arrange a driver with a small car or tuk-tuk for the final stretch. The coordinates 12.26045, 104.86725 point to the main eastern shore where boats launch. From Phnom Penh the trip takes three to four hours; from Siem Reap it is roughly two and a half hours. Public transport stops short, so plan a return ride in advance or stay overnight in the provincial capital.
Early morning boat rides let you watch fishers cast nets and observe herons and kingfishers along the reed beds. Walk the low earthen dike on the eastern side for open views across the water toward distant tree lines. In the dry season the receding water reveals mudflats that draw migratory shorebirds. Picnic under the scattered trees near the launch area or join villagers for fresh grilled fish at simple roadside stalls. Photographers find good light at sunrise and just before sunset when reflections turn the surface gold and pink.
The lake supports common Cambodian wetland species including painted storks, little egrets, and occasional otters. During the wet season the surface expands and lotus flowers appear near the edges. In drier months the water level drops, concentrating fish and birds in smaller areas. Bring binoculars for closer looks without disturbing the wildlife.
November through March offers the most comfortable temperatures and clearest skies. April and May grow hot and dusty before the rains arrive. July to October brings lush greenery but also mosquitoes and occasional flooding on access roads, so waterproof footwear helps. Weekdays are quieter than Sundays when local families sometimes picnic.
Pair a lake visit with the ancient ruins of Sambor Prei Kuk, roughly 30 kilometers east, or continue north to the floating villages on the Tonlé Sap near Kampong Chhnang. The provincial capital’s market provides a convenient stop for supplies and Khmer coffee before heading home.
