Beng Tung Lake: Cambodia’s Quiet Natural Retreat in Kampong Thom
Find calm waters, local fishing life, and easy nature escapes at this lesser-known lake northwest of Kampong Thom town.
A peaceful freshwater lake offering authentic rural scenery, birdlife, and gentle boat travel just outside Kampong Thom town.
Beng Riel is a modest but attractive natural lake set among rice fields and scattered villages in Kampong Thom Province. Unlike the vast Tonle Sap, this smaller body of water remains calm year-round and reflects the surrounding palm trees and distant hills. Visitors come for the quiet rather than crowds, making it an ideal half-day or full-day detour when traveling between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.
Early morning or late afternoon boat trips reveal the most activity. Local fishers pole narrow wooden boats through shallow areas while egrets and kingfishers hunt along the reed beds. The shoreline is lined with simple stilt houses where families raise ducks and grow vegetables on floating gardens. A short walk around the western edge leads to small shrines shaded by mango trees; these offer quiet spots for photos without disturbing residents.
From Kampong Thom town, the lake lies roughly 12 kilometers east along Route 6 before turning onto a laterite road that leads directly to the water. Most travelers hire a motorbike taxi or tuk-tuk for the round trip; the journey takes about 25 minutes each way. Those driving themselves should note that the final approach can become muddy after heavy rain. Public buses on the Phnom Penh–Siem Reap route pass the turnoff, but onward transport must be arranged locally.
The dry season from November through April provides the most comfortable conditions and clearest water views. From May to October the lake expands with monsoon rains, which can make boat travel more interesting for some but limits walking paths. Early morning visits avoid the midday heat and coincide with peak bird activity.
Many visitors pair Beng Riel with a stop at the ancient Prasat Sambor Prei Kuk temple complex, located about 30 kilometers north, or continue south to the floating villages of the Tonle Sap near Kampong Chhnang. The provincial capital itself offers basic markets and guesthouses if an overnight stay is needed before continuing north or south.
