Baphuon: The Majestic Pyramid Temple of Angkor

Explore the 11th-century temple-mountain famed for its colossal reclining Buddha and intricate bas-reliefs within the Angkor complex.

Why Visit Baphuon

Baphuon stands as one of Angkor’s most impressive temple-mountains, rising in five tiers to represent Mount Meru. Built in the mid-11th century by King Udayadityavarman II, the sandstone structure once held a 70-meter-long reclining Buddha on its western face, added centuries later when the site converted to Theravada Buddhism. Its restored western stairway now offers sweeping views across the surrounding forest and moat, making the climb rewarding for visitors who enjoy history and photography.

History and Architecture

The temple’s original design featured a central sanctuary atop a steep pyramid base flanked by long galleries. Much of the structure collapsed over time, and a massive 20th-century restoration project reassembled thousands of blocks using an innovative numbering system. Today the galleries display fine bas-reliefs depicting Hindu epics, daily Khmer life, and celestial dancers. The reclining Buddha, though partially reconstructed, remains the site’s most photographed feature.

What to See and Do

Begin at the eastern entrance and ascend the central stairway, pausing to examine the narrative carvings on the lower levels. At the summit, the small sanctuary offers a quiet vantage point. On the western side, follow the path to view the reclining Buddha from ground level. Allow at least 45 minutes to explore the galleries and terraces without rushing.

Getting There and Best Time to Visit

Baphuon lies inside the Angkor Archaeological Park, a short distance north of Angkor Wat. Most visitors reach the site by tuk-tuk, bicycle, or organized tour from Siem Reap. The dry season from November to February provides the most comfortable temperatures and clear skies for climbing. Early morning visits, just after park opening, help avoid both heat and larger tour groups.

Nearby Sites

Combine a visit with the neighboring Bayon, famous for its smiling faces, or the Terrace of the Elephants that borders the royal square. The walled city of Angkor Thom encompasses all three attractions, allowing a full day of exploration on foot or by bicycle.

Visitor tips

  • Wear sturdy shoes with good grip for the steep stairways and uneven stones.
  • Carry water and a hat; shade is limited once you leave the lower galleries.
  • Purchase a multi-day Angkor pass if you plan to visit several temples over consecutive days.
