A peaceful cave system in southern Cambodia featuring clear subterranean ponds, limestone chambers, and easy exploration near Kampot.
Water Pond Cave sits in the limestone hills of southern Cambodia, offering visitors a cool, quiet escape into an underground world of still pools and sculpted rock. Unlike busier coastal sites, this attraction rewards travelers with a sense of discovery as they move between chambers where water reflects faint daylight from above.
Inside the cave, shallow ponds stretch across several chambers, their surfaces often mirror-like when undisturbed. Limestone stalactites and flowstones line the walls, some hanging low enough to examine up close. Natural light filters through fissures, illuminating small terraces where water drips steadily. Visitors typically spend one to two hours walking the main passages, pausing to photograph the reflections or simply enjoy the constant 24-degree temperature. Some chambers allow careful wading in ankle-deep water, though deeper sections remain off-limits for safety.
The cave lies roughly 20 kilometers from Kampot town. Most travelers rent a motorbike or join a half-day tour that includes transport. The final approach follows a dirt track through rice fields and orchards; a short walk leads to the cave mouth. Those without their own transport can hire a remorque driver for the round trip, often combined with visits to nearby pepper farms.
The dry season from November through April brings reliable access and lower humidity inside the cave. During the wet months, water levels can rise and paths become muddy, though the cave itself remains open year-round. Early morning visits avoid any small tour groups and capture the softest natural light on the pools.
Combine a cave visit with the colonial architecture and riverfront of Kampot, or continue south to the crab markets and beaches of Kep. The Bokor Plateau, with its abandoned hill station and panoramic views, lies a short drive inland and pairs well for a full-day itinerary.
