Why Via Verda Stands Out

Via Verda offers one of the easiest and most scenic ways to explore rural Mallorca without a car. The route follows the bed of a long-abandoned railway, now resurfaced as a wide, traffic-free path ideal for cycling and walking. Almond and olive groves line much of the way, with occasional views toward the Serra de Tramuntana mountains and the Mediterranean coast.

The Route and What You’ll See

The main section runs roughly 29 kilometres between Manacor and Artà, passing through small villages and open farmland. Expect gentle gradients, well-maintained surfaces, and plenty of shade from mature trees. Look out for restored station buildings that now serve as cafés or information points, and watch for local wildlife including hoopoes and tortoises in spring and autumn.

Best Sections for Different Visitors

• Families and beginners: the flatter central stretch near Sant Llorenç des Cardassar.
• Longer rides: continue from Artà toward the coast at Cala Ratjada.
• Short walks: start at any village station and return the same way.

How to Get There

Regular trains from Palma reach Manacor in under an hour; from there the path begins directly beside the station. Buses also serve Artà and Sant Llorenç. Several bike-hire shops operate at the main trailheads and will deliver bicycles to your hotel if arranged in advance.

Best Time to Visit

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) bring mild temperatures and fewer crowds. Summer can be hot, so start early. Winter days are often sunny enough for comfortable riding, though evenings cool quickly.

Combine a ride with a visit to the historic centre of Artà, the market town of Manacor, or the coastal paths around Cala Millor. Many riders stop at the Coves d’Artà or the nearby beach at Cala Ratjada for a full day out.
