Untere Wümme: A Protected Wetland Sanctuary in Bremen

Explore the quiet river meadows and rich birdlife of this nature reserve along the Wümme in western Bremen.

Bremen-WestUpdated 15 October 2026

Why Visit Untere Wümme

Untere Wümme preserves a rare stretch of floodplain meadow and wetland along the lower Wümme River. This protected area supports breeding waders, wintering geese, and seasonal wildflowers that thrive in the regularly flooded grasslands. Visitors value its calm atmosphere compared with more crowded parks in central Bremen.

Things to See and Do

Follow the network of raised paths and dike trails that wind through wet meadows and along old river arms. Early morning or late afternoon walks reveal lapwings, redshanks, and occasionally rare visitors such as black storks. In spring the meadows turn yellow with marsh marigolds; autumn brings large flocks of migrating geese. Bring binoculars and a field guide; the flat terrain makes the reserve accessible for most mobility levels. Cyclists can combine the route with the longer Wümme Valley cycle path that continues toward Fischerhude.

Getting There

Reach the reserve from central Bremen by taking tram line 3 or 8 to the western suburbs and then a short bus connection toward the river. Several signed entry points lie along the dike road between the districts of Woltmershausen and Huchting. Free roadside parking is available at the main access tracks, though spaces fill quickly on sunny weekends. From the coordinates near 53.1564° N, 8.8383° E, a well-marked footpath leads directly into the meadows.

Best Time to Visit

April through June offers peak bird activity and wildflower displays. September and October are excellent for migratory geese and quieter trails. Summer can be humid with mosquitoes near standing water, while winter visits reward those who enjoy crisp air and the sight of large goose flocks against the low sun. The reserve remains open year-round, though some paths may be soft after heavy rain.

Nearby Attractions

Combine a visit with the historic harbor district of Bremen or the rhododendron gardens at Rhododendron-Park. The nearby Blockland area offers additional cycling routes through peatland landscapes. For a longer day out, continue along the river to the village of Fischerhude, known for its artists’ studios and traditional thatched houses.

Visitor tips

  • Wear sturdy waterproof footwear as paths can remain muddy even days after rain.
  • Carry binoculars and insect repellent, especially during the warmer months.
  • Stay on marked trails to protect ground-nesting birds and avoid private farmland.
