Tsele Mountain: Hiking Botswana’s Quiet Peak

A compact guide to reaching, climbing and enjoying Tsele, one of Botswana’s lesser-known but rewarding summits.

BotswanaUpdated 13 October 2026

Why Visit Tsele Mountain

Tsele rises from the rolling savanna of south-eastern Botswana, offering hikers clear views across the Kgatleng plains and distant silhouettes of the Tswapong Hills. Its modest height and straightforward routes make it an accessible day hike for visitors based in Gaborone or Mochudi who want a taste of Botswana’s highland scenery without multi-day logistics.

Getting There

The mountain lies roughly 60 km north-east of Gaborone. Most travellers drive via the A1 to Mochudi, then follow graded gravel roads toward the western flank. A high-clearance vehicle is advisable after rain; otherwise arrange a local driver in Mochudi. There is no formal trailhead parking, so ask villagers for permission to leave cars near the base.

Best Time to Visit

April to October brings cooler temperatures and lower humidity, ideal for hiking. Early morning starts are essential year-round because midday heat can exceed 35 °C. Avoid December to February when thunderstorms turn tracks into mud and flash floods are possible in the dry riverbeds that ring the peak.

Trails and Activities

Main Summit Route

The most direct path begins at the western foot and climbs steadily through mixed acacia and mopane woodland. The round trip takes three to four hours for fit walkers and rewards with 360-degree panoramas from the rocky summit.

Wildlife and Scenery

Look for baboon troops, klipspringer and a variety of raptors. The vegetation changes from dense bush at the base to sparse succulents near the top, giving photographers varied foregrounds against the wide Kalahari horizon.

Nearby Attractions

  • Mochudi’s historic kgosi kgotla and museum
  • Phuthadikobo Museum and its traditional craft demonstrations
  • Day trips to the Moretele River or the eastern edge of the Tswapong Hills

Visitor tips

  • Carry at least two litres of water per person; there are no reliable springs on the route.
  • Hire a local guide in Mochudi for both navigation and cultural context; paths are unmarked.
  • Pack sun protection and a light jacketu2014temperatures drop quickly once the sun sets.
