Statue of Daun Penh: Exploring Phnom Penh’s Legendary Founder
Honor Cambodia’s capital origins at the Statue of Daun Penh, a quiet riverside monument tied to the city’s founding…
A solitary 10th-century brick tower rising above the rice fields near Kampong Thom.
Far from the crowds of Angkor, Tower stands as a quiet example of early Khmer brick architecture. Built during the 10th century, its single surviving prasat features intricate false doors and floral motifs that predate the stone temples of Angkor Wat. The structure sits on a low laterite terrace surrounded by a moat, offering visitors a sense of how rural sanctuaries once functioned.
Walk the raised causeway to examine the tower’s eastern face, where carved lintels depict scenes from Hindu mythology. Climb the internal staircase (when permitted) for views across the surrounding paddy fields and distant palm groves. Photographers should arrive at sunrise when the brick glows warm red against the green landscape.
From Kampong Thom town, hire a moto or tuk-tuk for the 25 km drive east on National Road 6 then south on a laterite track. The final approach crosses a small wooden bridge; dry-season travel is easiest. No public transport reaches the site directly.
November through February offers cool mornings and clear skies ideal for photography and walking. Avoid May to October when heavy rains can make the access road impassable and mosquitoes abundant.
