Tonnara Berlignieri: Exploring Calabria’s Ancient Tuna Trap Ruins

Wander the weathered remains of a historic tonnara on Calabria’s Ionian coast and discover centuries-old fishing traditions.

Introduction to Tonnara Berlignieri

Perched on the rocky shoreline near Crotone, Tonnara Berlignieri preserves the stone foundations and channels of a traditional tuna fishery that once supported the local economy. These archaeological traces reveal how generations of Calabrian fishermen channeled migrating tuna into enclosed chambers for capture and processing.

Historical Significance

The site illustrates the sophisticated engineering of Mediterranean tonnare. Massive stone walls directed fish through a series of nets and traps during seasonal migrations. Although the wooden structures have vanished, the surviving masonry outlines the scale of operations that supplied preserved tuna across southern Italy.

What to See and Do

Walk the low walls that once formed the “death chamber” and examine the eroded channels leading to the shore. Interpretive panels explain the seasonal rhythm of the fishery and its role in local trade. The adjacent pebble beach offers quiet swimming and views of the Ionian Sea. Photographers find dramatic compositions at sunrise when light rakes across the ruins.

Getting There

Reach the site by car along the SS106 coastal road south of Crotone; a small parking area sits beside the ruins. Public buses stop at the nearby hamlet of Berlignieri, followed by a short walk. Cyclists enjoy the flat coastal route from Le Castella, roughly 12 kilometers away.

Best Time to Visit

Spring and early autumn provide mild temperatures ideal for exploring the exposed ruins and nearby coastal paths. Summer brings stronger sun and occasional winds; winter visits are possible but may coincide with rough seas that limit beach access.

Nearby Attractions

  • Capo Colonna archaeological park with its Doric temple
  • The medieval castle and fishing port of Le Castella
  • Long sandy beaches stretching toward Capo Rizzuto
  • The Greek walls and museum in Crotone

Visitor tips

  • Wear sturdy shoes; the uneven stone surfaces and loose gravel can be slippery near the water.
  • Bring water and sun protection; shade is limited and the site lies fully exposed to the sea.
  • Combine your visit with a stop at Le Castella for fresh seafood and castle views in the same half-day.
