Why Tonle Sap Stands Out
Tonle Sap expands from roughly 2,500 square kilometers in the dry months to more than 16,000 square kilometers during the monsoon, when the Mekong River reverses flow and floods the basin. This annual cycle creates a rich wetland that supports millions of fish and migratory birds while sustaining dozens of floating and stilted villages.
What to See and Do
Boat excursions from Siem Reap reach the lake in under an hour. Travelers commonly visit Chong Kneas, Kompong Phluk, or the more distant Prek Toal. At Kompong Phluk, wooden houses perch on 6- to 8-meter stilts above the water; during high water the same structures sit at lake level. Prek Toal hosts a bird sanctuary where painted storks, spot-billed pelicans, and greater adjutants nest from December to May. Short stops at floating markets or fish-processing platforms reveal daily life built entirely on water.
Wildlife Watching
Early-morning departures increase chances of seeing large flocks. Bring binoculars rather than relying on boat engines to approach wildlife. The flooded forest around Prek Toal remains the most reliable site for concentrated bird activity.
How to Get There
Most visitors start from Siem Reap. Private cars or taxis reach the main boat piers in 30 to 45 minutes; shared taxis and motos cost less but require negotiation. From the pier, long-tail boats or speedboats carry passengers onto the lake. Multi-day itineraries sometimes continue south to Kampong Chhnang or Pursat.
Best Time to Visit
Water levels peak between September and November, offering the classic image of houses floating among submerged trees. From December to April the lake shrinks, exposing mudflats and concentrating birds near remaining water channels. Both seasons reward visitors; choose based on interest in village life versus wildlife.
Nearby Attractions
Angkor Archaeological Park lies within an hour’s drive of the lake’s northern shore, allowing easy combination with temple visits. The Preah Vihear temple complex and the Kulen Mountains waterfall trails sit farther north but remain feasible day trips from Siem Reap bases.
