Ruderi Villa Romana: Ancient Roman Villa Ruins on Calabria’s Ionian Coast
Wander the evocative remains of a seaside Roman villa near Locri, where mosaics and thermal baths overlook the sparkling…
A remote granite peak offering sweeping views across the Pollino massif and quiet trails through ancient pine woods.
Timpone della Capanna rises above the beech and pine forests of Pollino National Park, delivering panoramic views of the Pollino massif, the Ionian Sea on clear days, and the surrounding valleys of northern Calabria. Its relatively low visitor numbers make it an ideal destination for hikers seeking solitude rather than crowded trails.
The main route begins near the hamlet of Campotenese and climbs steadily through mixed woodland before emerging onto open slopes dotted with Bosnian pine. The path is well-marked with red-and-white CAI signs and gains roughly 800 metres of elevation over 6–7 km one way. At the broad summit ridge, hikers can wander freely across grassy clearings and rocky outcrops for unobstructed 360-degree views.
The mountain lies between the towns of Castrovillari and Morano Calabro. Drivers should take the A2 motorway exit at Campotenese, then follow the SP177 and forest roads to the trailhead parking area at approximately 1,100 m. No public transport reaches the starting point, so a rental car or organised transfer from Castrovillari is necessary.
Late spring (May–June) and early autumn (September–October) offer the most comfortable temperatures and reliable trail conditions. Snow can linger on north-facing slopes into April, while July and August bring heat and occasional thunderstorms.

The trail is moderate for fit hikers; the main challenge is the steady 800 m climb rather than technical terrain.
No services exist above the trailhead; bring all supplies and plan to return to the valley for food and water.
Wild camping is permitted in the national park provided you leave no trace and avoid the summit ridge in high winds.
Older children accustomed to mountain walking can manage the route, but the long ascent and lack of shade make it tiring for younger kids.
Look for golden eagles, red kites, and herds of roe deer, especially at dawn or dusk near the forest edge.
