Discovering the Saline River
The Saline River rises on the eastern slopes of the Gran Sasso massif in Abruzzo and flows roughly 50 kilometres eastward to meet the Adriatic Sea near Pineto. Its clear waters carve a gentle valley lined with poplars, willows, and small cultivated fields before reaching coastal dunes. The river remains largely free of heavy development, offering visitors a quiet corridor through both inland hills and seaside landscapes.
What to See and Do
Walk or cycle the riverside paths that begin near the village of Cermignano and continue downstream through Atri and Roseto degli Abruzzi. Birdwatchers can spot herons, kingfishers, and seasonal migrants along reed-fringed banks. In spring and early summer, wild orchids appear on the slopes above the water. Near the mouth, the protected dunes of the Pineto coastal park provide easy boardwalks and sea views where the river finally meets the Adriatic.
Exploring Nearby Villages
Stop in Atri to visit its historic centre and the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, then descend to the river for a picnic. Further downstream, the medieval hill town of Roseto degli Abruzzi offers cafés and a small marina. Short side trips lead to the vineyards of the Colline Teramane DOCG area, where Montepulciano grapes grow on the terraced slopes overlooking the valley.
How to Get There
The nearest major airport is Pescara Abruzzo Airport, about 30 minutes by car or train from the lower river. Regional trains stop at Roseto degli Abruzzi and Atri stations, both within a short taxi or bus ride of riverside access points. Drivers can follow the SS16 coastal road or the A14 motorway exits at Roseto or Pineto. Parking is available at several marked trailheads along the valley.
Best Time to Visit
April through June and September through October bring mild temperatures ideal for walking and cycling. Summer months are warmer but still pleasant near the coast; avoid the river after heavy rain when water levels rise quickly. Winter visits reveal quieter landscapes and occasional snow on the distant Gran Sasso peaks.
