Why Visit Thatswane Hill

Thatswane Hill rises from the flat bushveld of Botswana’s Central District as a distinctive rocky landmark. Its slopes offer hikers panoramic views across acacia-dotted plains and distant inselbergs. The mountain’s quiet trails and minimal infrastructure make it ideal for travelers seeking an unspoiled natural experience away from more commercialized sites.

Getting There

Thatswane Hill lies roughly 30 km northeast of Serowe. Most visitors drive from Gaborone via the A1 highway to Serowe, then continue on gravel roads toward the hill’s base. A high-clearance vehicle is recommended for the final stretches, especially after rain. Local taxis or arranged transfers from Serowe are possible for those without their own transport.

What to See and Do

The main draw is the hike to the summit. The ascent begins through mixed woodland before reaching exposed granite slabs that require moderate scrambling. From the top, visitors can see the surrounding Central District landscape stretching toward the Tswapong Hills. Birdlife includes hornbills and francolins, while small mammals such as rock hyraxes are often visible. Photographers appreciate the golden light at sunrise and sunset.

Best Time to Visit

The coolest and driest months, May through October, provide the most comfortable hiking conditions. Temperatures are moderate and vegetation is thinner, improving visibility. The wet season (November to April) brings lush greenery but also higher temperatures and occasional thunderstorms that can make trails slippery.

Nearby Attractions

  • Serowe’s Kgosi Bathoen II Museum offers insight into Bangwato history and culture.
  • The nearby Tswapong Hills provide additional hiking and waterfall opportunities during the rainy season.
  • Khama Rhino Sanctuary, a short drive south, protects white and black rhinos in a fenced reserve.

Visitor tips

  • Carry at least two liters of water per person and wear sturdy shoes for the rocky sections.
  • Hire a local guide from Serowe to navigate unmarked trails and learn about Tswana plant uses.
  • Visit early in the morning to avoid midday heat and return before dark, as there are no facilities on the mountain.
